Got the FunTreks off-road map today for the Silverton area that includes the Alpine Loop. Part of the Alpine Loop is Engineer Pass which is 12,800 feet. Cinnamon Pass is at 12,640 feet. This will be the highest we've ever been on trails. Because this area is so high in elevation, I strongly suggest we go in August. Average high temperature in August is 71 degrees. In September the average low temp is below freezing. To me, the map shows at least three days of riding out of Silverton, CO. Off the Alpine Loop are several spur trails. The map shows 30 named trails. We may have to trailer to many of these trails. At each trail end are interesting archeological sites - mines, cabins, lakes, mountain tops, mills, ruins, waterfalls. You could stay for weeks and not see everything.

Haven't seen to many responses to this thread. Larry and I are definitely going. I have 260 miles of trails with only having to trailer a short distance one day, three days of no trailering. Tons of stuff to see, ghost towns, silver and gold mine tours, ruins, and hundreds of mines. Silverton is a quaint little town (only main street is paved) with several hotels and restaurants. Durango to Silverton train is one day for those who want to.
I talked to Nate and Lindsey (rode AZPT with us) and they are definitely interest.
There a 3 interesting trails. All of which Larry said he can't wait to ride.
Engineer Pass - northern part of Alpine Loop with shelf trail. Poughkeepsie Gulch - has the Wall but there is a bypass Black Bear Pass - one way nasty switchbacks down into Telluride. Non licensed vehicles cannot go down it unless they have trailer in Telluride bring their machines out.
Licensed motorcycles can go everywhere.

Allen - If we use the 30ft trailer, we'll need to put on heavier duty axles. Bob suggested replacing the existing axles with 5,000lb axles.

I think Idaho will be the next big ride destination for me, looks to be a lot of good trails out there. Idaho is a prime destination for awesome single track, or so they say.....

Looks like he was planning on 9/15. We’ll be heading off to ride the KAT on 9/19 so that won’t work.

I have seen post on forums for years about the Alpine Loop and it was only 63 miles and Lake City was not ATV friendly. Everybody said you had to find a local to trailer your ATV through town, they are now ATV friendly to a degree. I talked to Funtreks friend and he gave me some better info. The more I looked into it the more I like it. Silverton is much nicer than Marysvale or Taylor Park.

Randy, our AZ trip was about riding a lot of miles, this trip is not about the miles but the scenery and the evenings.
