So my rzr has been keeping a greasy looking starter after the last few rides. Not dripping just the case stays greasy looking. Seemed odd since after riding the motor would be dry dirty and the starter would be a greasy looking dirty. Come to find out this is not uncommon. Oil gets inside the starter on some Rzrs. Amazing to me the issues a Popo can have that I did not know was possible. It starts and runs fine but guess I should fix it. It uses no oil so I'm guessing the starter is just seeping some out. Why in the heck does Polaris have the flywheel and stator running in oil? Seems odd. The starter has o rings to seal it to the case but the oil seems to be going inside the starter. Looking in rzrforum this is common on xp 900s so I have gone ahead and ordered a replacement starter. Does make me wonder if it matters since it starts great. The oil bath is probably designed to reliably keep the stator cool vs relying on air on a mud caked engine . All seals leak , and the dirt sticks to it . I agree about Polaris issues. Always a surprise to me what can go wrong .
