Michale P and & I headed up to Hilltop late Friday and Ken had gone up earlier in the day. We ran into the big storm just as we came into Bluewell. Terrible winds, looked like a tornado was just around the next corner for about a 1/2 hour. Along hwy 71 (the last road to hilltop) there were 2 large trees down. Some of the locals went back to get chain saws to clear the road. It took us about 2 hours to go from Bluewell to Hilltop. Luckily when we arrived at Hiltop there was Power. As we discovered the next morning most of the surrounding areas were without power.
Saturday
Ken brought his motocycle up as his 4 wheeler was still in the shop for repairs and he did some road riding by himself. Michael and I took the creek trail to Tiny's then the connector to Northfork. We had to go around or cut several downed trees and turn back at one. There were two sections of the connector blocked by a large tree which fell right at a switch back. We had a big challenge getting by them. And with the heat we were worn out by the time we got to Northfork. The power had just come back on for a few businesses at about 3 pm. We decided to ride the roads back to hilltop and rest in the airconditioning for a bit and call it a day.
Sunday
Ken, Michael and I took the road to Ashland entrance and went down the never ending trail to Northfork. Many trees down, some had go arounds and others you had to climb over. Ken had fun jumping the trees. From Northfork we rode the roads back as we wanted to pack up and head home at a reasonable time.
Note: My guess would be that for the next month or so we will run into trees down from this storm, so to all who can, carry your chain saws!!!!
