So I am new to auto transmissions and I have a question. My arctic cat tranny "clatters" some when going downhill like it can't make up it's mind what gear it needs to be in. It does not do it all the time, and if I am just easing down a hill using the engine to brake with, it does not do it all.
Anyone else have that with their automatics?

If the cat is like the my can-am could be the u-joints. I thought I had some noise in the transmission as well but turned out to be the u-joints going (gone) bad. I'm waiting on the parts to fix it.

The cvt belt drive transmissions are pretty simple. Unless you've had it in deep water/deep mud, it should be ok. I think the Arctic Cat CVT's are pretty solid units, designed similar to the Yamaha CVT's. Depending on how many miles you have on it, it might be time for a belt. The only other thing I can think of is if you have larger/heavier/more aggressive tires, you might might need some different weight or springs from a clutch kit in yours.
Randy had an Arctic Cat for a good long while and might have some insight, but I don't recall him having any issues and I think ran pretty close to a stock size tire. I think his was an H1.
Duane Y has a Cat but his has a clutch kit with big oulaw tires etc. He would burn up a lot of belts though. His was an H2 Kawi.
Oh wait, that reminds me....Is it an H1 or an H2? If it has the twin with the Kawi trans, then you might sure enough have an issue. The Kawi's are known to burn belts, and have issues.

Well, it only had 145 miles on it when I got it and now it has about 205. I got if from one of my employees and it was his wifes ride. I have been riding with Tim and Karen before so I don't think it's ever been in very deep water or mud. She was afraid to get it too dirty.
It may just be something that needs adjusting, well see how it does this weekend.

The Arctic Cat Ultramatic is an extremely solid tranny. It has an internal clutch like the Yamaha's so the belts last a really long time. It also has a metal cover plate so water leaking into the tranny during mud/creek crossings is very rare. The clatter is most likely at the point where the engine and gearbox input are about at the same speed and the engine braking is just barely having to work. There are no gears being changed so no issue there. You may be hearing the weights at the lowest point.
I had the H1 and it had no tranny issues. No weird noises there. Duane's was the 650V2 that has the Kawasaki Belt Eater Tranny and 650 V engine.
The CVT tranny's do make some odd noises. We can listen to it this weekend. Likely it's just the normal noises. A stock Arctic Cat with 200 miles will unlikely have belt issues.

I spoke with an arctic cat dealer this afternoon and they told me it is normal. No need to worry as long as it is during deceleration and not acceleration.
