I finally got an Amsteel synthetic winch cable to replace the finger stabbin' glove rippin' steel cable. This stuff does not bind on the spool, it is lighter than steel and has a 4500 lb rating. It is not as abrasion resistant as steel however. Has anyone else tried this?

David from what I know of them people love them get yourself a good tree strap since it will cut. The only other thing I know you have to watch with them is you shouldn't use a roller fairlead.

I have not heard about not using the roller fairlead. What is the problem with that? That would seem to protect from abrasion.

Here is one write up I have read on it. Its at atvfrontier.com/MReviews/op=show/rid=41.htmlHere is a quote if you don't want to read the entire thing. "Quite possibly the single most important aspect of using a synthetic winch rope is having the correct hawse fairlead. During our conversation with AllTerrainOnline.com they informed us that many times the biggest mistake made by ATVers is using a roller fairlead with their synthetic rope. All to often the roller will pinch and tear the rope (or cause premature wear) that specially designed aluminum hawse fairleads prevent. AllTerrainOnline supplied us with a billet aluminum hawse fairlead that is specially machined, unlike traditional fairleads, to prevent winch rope fray and/or tangles. It also allows a silky smooth surface for the synthetic winch rope to pull against at any angle and not to mention looks great!"

I had one. It lasted one trip. The problem was that it somehow got pinched between the edge of the spool and the housing. Since it is thinner and more flexible it was able to slip in the space. It got wrapped up on the inside shaft a couple of times and wedged the winch apart. I had to take the winch apart to remove it. The cable was badly frayed and kinked so I removed it. Went to Lowe's and got a 3/16" cable for $9.00 and still using it. I did have a Hawse fairlead for the reasons mentioned above.
