Anyone ever heard of a stingy air filter box.I'm thinking about putting one on my rzr. From what I've read there is a issue with stock air filter box,so i thought i'd throw this out and see if anyone has heard of the stingy air intake.

I've got a RZR XP 900 so i don't have first hand info on the std RZR but my understanding is that using the stock Polaris paper filter is the best way to protect the engine on the 800. Of course inspect and change filter at proper intervals. Daryl J on here might be able to give you more info as he has an 800 S.

You are right the 08 and some 09 Rzrs had a airbox issue that allowed some dust in and caused a LOT of top end rebuilds. One option many went with was a Dragonfire airbox but its not cheap. I think there was a recall or just a redesign sometime in 09 that fixed the issue. I know the 10's and later dont have that same problem.

Thanks guys for the input.I talked to the service manager at Full Throtle Motersports, and he did say they redesigned the filter its self, but sometimes I just don't trust the dealerships.I think I'll do some more reading and see what i can find out...Thanks again

Heres the deal on the air box on the 08 and some 09 RZRs. If the air box lid has 2 clips on it, then thats the crappy one. If it has 3 clips on it, then that is the updated air box . I think the airbox was mounted a little different too on the 08s, but not 100% sure. The 08s can be updated to the 3 clip style, but I don't know what the cost or whats involved with changing it. Also another thing too, you need to check the clamp that goes from the air box to the throttle body, because sometimes they are not tightened down enough from the factory. I have an 09 RZR that was manufactured in Sept 08 with over 2600 miles and have not had the first bit of dust get into the throttle body or burned the first ounce of oil. But I do check the air box after every trip from WV. Another thing too and not trying to sound like a jerk. But I have found that most Polaris dealerships have a tendency to deny the whole air box issue and try to blame the owners for the problems. I have been a loyal Polaris owner for over 10 years and have owned 6 different Polaris atvs and will probably continue to buy their products. But I think they are a company that does not stand behind their products very well and has a tendency to put out some poorly engineered off road vehicles with some cheaply made parts. They put out some extremely nice stuff, but you just got to keep an eye on em maintenance wise...just my opinion. oh by the way, dont use a K&N air filter or one thats like it, unless you are driving in dust free conditions.

You apparently have a late model 08 since it has the updated the 3 clip lid. You should be okay. Most RZR owners that have intake problems with the updated air box are the guys out west in the sand dunes and in Utah where the dust is more like a fine powder than out here on the east coast where its mostly just fine particles of dirt. Believe me, before I bought my RZR back in 09, I was very skeptical about getting one after reading about all the stink on them. But so far its been a great ride!

One other thing I do is grease the foam lip on my stock paper Polaris filter. That helps keep anything from getting by the filter. The XP has a bunch of latches, but you still have to make sure it all gets seated properly. Check and double check. I've heard guys with XP's having issues too, but it is because they didn't get the airbox seated properly. I'm all stock and it is tough to get to and see that it's lined up and seated right.

I went with a Vent Racing Stingy Airbox. It seems like every time i checked my air filter one of the clips broke i have it on the rzr now,now my concern is the way the air box locates with the input pointing toward the bottom of the machine.I called Vent and they said that was for the use of gravity letting sand and dust fall out,but i think he was talking about sand WVa. don't have much sand just mud and dust those guys ride the dunes so mabey that is what he was thlking about guess i'll just snorkle it and that will take care of it.BTW you can rotate the canaster to have the input whereever you want it.It appears to be a good design with a inner unifilter and a donaldson outer filter so i'm looking to snorkle it and see what happens...Mike
