I had Ray's Cycle Shop in Thomasville adjust my valves while they were replacing my starter and wheel bearings. Their hourly labor rate just increased from 48 to 56 bucks. I was charged for a hours worth of labor. I'm not saying it didn't take that long, but if this isn't too technical I believe I might attempt it next time. I guess I'm a decent shade tree mechanic. Have any of you adjusted your own valves? If so, how well did it go?

Lee, i have an 03 honda foreman 450 and i adjust my own valves. i would consider myself a below average to average shade tree mechanic and adjusting my valves would rate maybe a 4 out of ten on the complicated scale. it really is pretty easy. i have the honda foreman service manual for mine and im guessing it would be very similar to yours. if not just look up or call the dealer to get the valve clearance. doing the job is actually very easy but you have to take off some plastic and the gas tank this is the hardest part. for an example, it took me less than three hours the very first time i did it and i can do it now in less then two.

Thanks for your response. For the amount that I paid the dealership I could have bought a new service manual. I talked with one of the mechanics when I picked the four wheeler up and he said exactly what you said. Taking the plastic and gas tank off takes the most time. Next time I think about paying an hours worth of labor I may consider buying a service manual. I've seen the manuals around $50. Thanks again!

The specifications for valve clearance are in the owners manual, long as you don't need a service manual to get to them, no need to buy a service manual. I'm willing to bet its .006" clearance. But just look in your owners manual that came with the quad, it will tell you.

Its .006
And on the new 500's you have a valve access cap you can take off for each valve... making it alot easier than the old 450 foremans etc..
