Anybody considering it? It is expensive!!!! A 2021 X3 cost $1175 not including what you install. Older cheaper machines cost $600 and up.

This thread here on TTB was the first I'd heard the tag (metal plate) was that expensive! I was previously only concerned about the equipment cost (the street legal kit). Now any thoughts I had about being able to legally drive to the gas station are abolished. That was literally the only reason I was interested other than the novelty factor. I put a legal N.C. tag on my KRX yesterday. I waited until I knew someone that did it. When I heard his was under $200 I decided to do it. There was some confusion in the beginning about the Highway Use tax. Since we are restricted from all roads we do not pay the highway use tax. That completely changed the cost. SuperATV has the best write-up I've found: www.superatv.com/offroad-atlas/north-carolina-is-making-utvs-street-legal-when-what-and-how/I bought the XTC kit for the KRX 1000, I did not want the RYCO turn signal stalk. But I've personally seen the RYCO kit with the stalk & the fang lights in the grill and it's pretty sweet. I installed the kit myself. Using the link on SuperATV's explanation I downloaded the NC DMV MVR-59 form and filled it out saying I was the person that installed the necessary modifications. 1. MVR-59 form stating you installed the modifications required to put a tag on it. Don't sign it until you are at the DMV with $5 cash for the notary. 2. Safety inspection by a shop with a DMV computer. All they do is enter your VIN number and check boxes on the computer saying it passed inspection. Your guy may actually verify everything, I know my guy and he took me at my word. 3. Proof of insurance. I already have liability and comprehensive, I won't trailer my machine without coverage. 4. Your MCO, or manufacturer certificate of origin, we do not get titles in N.C. ITEMS 5 & 6 ADDED 7/2/2022:5. Six months went by without a title for the KRX, finally got a letter from Raleigh saying they needed a copy of my bill of sale. I sent them that and I got my title three weeks later. The title does not show a lien, its completely clean. 6. Went to put a North Carolina tag on the Wolverine X2 June 29, and had the (5) things listed above. Was told they needed an MVR-180, Odometer statement, from the dealer. Went and got that, went to a different tag office. Did not give them the Odometer statement at first, wanted to see if they asked for it. They did ask for it! Left with my tag. Once at the DMV I had to pay a $56 title fee, $30 to the state for vehicle fee, same to my county, and then taxes. The appraised value of my machine was $7500 (!!!) and the taxes on that. It was $226 total plus the $5 notary fee. They kept my MCO... I am hoping I get a real title back in 6-10 weeks for my $56. First thing I did was drive 3 miles into town to fill up and then go to the post office. Today I took a load of aluminum cans to the county-run trash collection site, round trip 4 miles. Definitely gets a lot of looks. Never saw a cop the entire time. I bought a set of take-off wheels and put 31x10.50x15 light truck tires (Cooper Evolution M/T) on for road riding here and in West Virginia. With tire balance beads. So I'm no longer on 35" tires most of the time. Got all my power back! Whereas before I struggled to hit 60 I can easily reach 68 now. It's very comfortable and stable at 60 mph and below, probably will never go faster than 60 unless "seeing what she'll do". EDIT 7/2/2022: The Wolverine X2 was done June 29 and came in at the exact same dollar amounts as the KRX: $226 total plus the $5 notary fee.

Very good write-up. Be careful on roads - even the lightest car will crush you and the KRX if they hit you.
If I could ride somewhere local I’d be in on a tag.

It's definitely dangerous. Cars have never - ever - seen a legal side by side around here. I'm the first that I know of, never seen one myself. When it's 45 mph and they want to do 60 they get pissed if I'm in front. Nothing like West Virginia... no respect here, and I'm at less than 15 miles total here.
In WV I've been in a truck hauling a trailer on 52 South and we all did 40-45 mph for ten plus miles because of a side by side.

I had a scary incident happen yesterday. Wiley and Mike Moores’ friend Danny was behind me and saw it.
I was headed toward Bluefield after riding. Towing my Talon with my FJ. I had just passed the mine entrance and was on the dirty pavement the mine sweeps all day. It had been drizzling so the road was mud and trucker oil. I was going approx 30mph when i started to brake for the sharp guardrail turn. A group of SXS was coming at me. When braking I realized I was sliding and my ABS was pulsing. I realized I probably could not make the turn without hitting the X3 coming at me. I knew if I hit the X3 head on I would injure the driver. I then laid on my horn to warn the X3 and headed off road luckily into a gravel area the mine uses for filling water trucks. I barely missed the X3. I was so happy to stop and the X3 pass.
Very heart racing. Could have been very bad. I wasn’t concerned with my FJ but more concerned with potentially hitting a SXS head on or on the drivers door. I’ve had numerous SXS and all are thin tubes vs the well engineered crumple zones in vehicles.

So glad you missed the SxS. Thanks for the heads up. I'll be more careful in that area.

I did a 30-mile loop today all on blacktop. About like West Virginia just didn't trailer 5 hours.

Late seeing this Lonnie, next time call me. Or I need to call you trail brother! There is no DOT tire requirement in NC at this time.
I decided to switch from the extreme 35” XTR 370’s to Cooper light truck tires 31x10x15 only to facilitate the road riding. So far I’m very happy. The machine makes up for the tires. Did over 200 miles the two weekends it snowed! On road off road trails around fields and muddy creek trails. Previously have done four separate local rides. About 500 miles on the LT tires. Very happy. May sell the 35”s.

Does anyone know if NC honors other states licensing?

I continue to refer to this list when people ask what they need to do. This reply is just to keep the thread current so it won’t be archived. Thank you.
