I did it several months ago and had 185.1 miles when Scott and myself got back at 9:08pm after leaving Hilltop at 830am. It's a good ride but full one. Next time I wouldn't mind exploring some and just spending night in Gilbert. I need to take my Rzr on a short ride before trying that again. I ordered new rear hubs, bearings, and knuckles (all oem) since I can't get all of the play out replacing just one or two parts. Attachments:

We left late on Friday we got there with hardly any blacktop, but it was late. We rode mostly black top to get back in reasonable time. I think Alan and Scott did around 260mi in the day and a half, I did 20 less

Whoa. How late did y'all leave Hilltop? I wouldn't even consider Hilltop to Gilbert if I couldn't leave by 10am.

If you got to Gilbert at 6pm then you definitely had a late ride back. Taking mostly trails it would run me 4 to 5 hrs of mostly fast riding to make it from Gilbert to Hilltop without stopping.

Can you give a quick explaination on how you get from Hill Top to Gilbert by trail? I have hit all the towns around the Ashland area, but never made it to Gilbert. I heard there was a railbed that went there, but have never found it.

There's no quick explanation. Best I can say quick is go to Sterling Drive In And head up behind the bowling alley across from it. Follow the trail past the prison (you will see Prison in distance on right). Basically keep heading Northwest from there.

ScreamingHonda,
Just in case you don't know where Sterling Drive-In is, its in Welch, WV. So to get from Hilltop Escape to Gilbert, you go through Welch.

We rode from RCH Lodging to Gilbert two weeks ago tomorrow. It was a 126 mile round trip. We left at 8 am and got back at approx. 6 pm. We took the connector trail to Tiny's to haul road to the trail toward reed junction. We turned left before the graveyard and came out on Hwy 16 near the little white church. We rode up 16 a little ways and took the trail that goes up beside the motorcycle gang clubhouse and picked up the trail that comes from the old bowling alley. we took the locked gate bypass because the last time we were up that way the gate was closed and you would have to navigate a bad hill to get around it. I'm glad we took the bypass because they have now blocked off the go around path. We took trails most the way there but took alot of black top on the way back due to the time and it was dusty as heck. We followed Bob's maps mostly. That's the first time we've been all the way to Gilbert. We've rode those trails toward Gilbert several times but never with the intention of going all the way to Gilbert. It was a fun ride. Thanks Bob for the maps.

I don't know what RCH stands for but it owned by Larry and Karen Pressley. It it at the top of Bud Mountain. They have two places they rent. They are very nice folks and their place is kinda isolated from the trail riding crowds. We've been staying with them about 5 or 6 years. We rent it a week in the spring and a week in the fall every year. Plenty of parking space and Larry will let us use whatever he has if we need it. Can't say enough nice things about them.

We took the bad hill around the gate. Alan made it look easy.

We rode from Gilbert to Welch and back in November. Took us about 10 hours and 155 miles. We had to take the pavement around where it's blocked off for the hunting club. I really want to start at bramwell and ride to Gilbert stay the there.

Wish we would have filmed us going down the bypass for the gate near Gilbert, that was the sketchiest thing we did.

Thanks for the replys guys. We went behind the bowling alley in Welsh and ended up coming out on the trail from the haul road to Welsh. We took the creek trail back to Ashland. I saw several turnoffs from that trail that may have taken us to Gilbert. We need to explore that route a little more.
