The link below will show you where we rode ATVs this past Saturday and Sunday. We used Carver's Spot as a test run for the Utah trip. The Spot sends its location every 10 minutes. share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=05I9SS2Y2IpDyjT8x3Yg7g1aBXMjpG8HiOn Saturday, we rode to Sophia, WV. The most memorable and scary event was Allen flipping his ATV on a steep incline. Allen is one tough old bird. He came out of it with a scratch on his arm. On Saturday, we rode to Bramwell. Had afternoon drenching rain both days.

Where did Allen flip his ATV? Side roll I assume or was it an end over flip?

I talked to Larry and he said it was where we tied the rope onto the ATV's a few weeks ago right near Sophia.

Hope Allen's OK. Good thing he's tough and has some concrete running in his blood. If it flipped over on top of him that's a true flip that can cause some pain.

Bob, As usual, we used your map to navigate with. Got some corrections for you to make. Sept 3, 2011 I could not find the blue trail near Sophia. My plan was to take part of the red trail and then take the blue trail. Because I could not find the blue trail, I stayed on the red trail. As a result, Allen flipped over. Had Greg or Tom been leading, they would have known to stop and not attempt the steep rutted incline. Unfortunately, I did not stop and we very nearly had a bad accident with Allen and possibly others. On the phone today, you said the blue trail was actually the railroad track. I didn’t know that. You may want to remove the red trail and possibly even the blue trail. People going to Sophia should take the trail through Beckley tunnel 2 and then take the road to Sophia. I’ve marked the trail “Allen Flipped Here”. We were in really bad rain and it was getting dark on the way back from Sophia. We decided to stay on mostly green trails. However, what was marked as a green trail was actually a paved road. So this section needs to be magenta rather than green. I tagged it “Road”. There was one section that was a trail, but it was impassible with zigzag ravines. I’ve marked the trail yellow color and marked it “Impassible Trail". Recommend removing this trail. Sep 4, 2011 The trail near Tolliver Lake has been blocked by boulders and berms. I created a waypoint named “Boulders”. I named part of the track we took “Boulders” as well. I have attached the tracks and waypoint in the file "LaborDayCorrections.gdb". Attachments:

I shouldn't have done it, but I went up the steep incline. I was leading for that section of the trail. I shouldn't have done it. Really wish I hadn't. Allen was right behind me. When I got to the top, I parked my ATV and was getting off. I turned my head to where I had just come up. The first thing I saw was Allen's entire skid plate. To me it looked like it went straight back on its rear wheels. I ran to the drop off and saw Allen in a sitting position. His head was down and he was holding his right arm. Allen's ATV came to rest on its wheels against Greg's ATV. So the ATV did a 360 degree flip. I saw a perfect (clear) tire track on Allen's back. Allen must have fallen off behind the ATV as it went vertical. It then ran over him on the way back down. I half slid down the trail to get to Allen. I asked him if he was ok. All he said was "Give me a minute". I saw blood on his arm and thought his right arm was broke for sure, but Allen was able to move it at the elbow. Allen said that a tire hit his arm and that it even burned his arm. Its a miracle that Allen wasn't crushed by his own ATV and wasn't hurt worse. We got real lucky this day.

Allen is one tough man, His Grizzly come straight up and on to him. The whole bike rolled over him, he had tire marks on his shoulder and helmet. I used the front of my bike to stop his bike from going on down the hill. I was worried I could not stop it or it might roll over me. There's proof of the value of a helmet and having other riders with you. Thanks God Allen is OK.

That is a rough spot. Short but tricky with the little ditch and rain would make it far worse. I can definitely see an ATV flipping there.
Bob's maps are just guides. The trails change constantly and we all need to remember that. The Beckley Tunnel 2 trail could easily get rough with just 1 or two tree's down on the tight part. If we mark too many as unpassable we will be stuck riding on roads and not really knowing the current condition of the trails.
Allen -- Hope you post. How's the arm and back?

Larry, I changed the map. Just curious, the section you called impassable was given to me from Al, he and Jane have ridden it. Maybe he will comment. As far as the section where Allen flipped we need to start using our winches, we did not just buy them for getting out of mud.

That section is passable but will take some care. How about some Home Depot Camoflauge Rope? Looks cool and is easy...

I am thankful that Allen is OK. Allen tipping over is no one's fault, it is ATV riding. We are going to go down trails and machines are going to tip. We must do our best to ride safe but accidents happen and must be prepared for a machine going over.
If Allen can go over, anyone of us can. Part of the enjoyment of riding is the unknow challenge of it.

Talked to Allen. Sounds like that was a heck of a flip. He said his Griz was vapor locking and sputtered near the top. The engine then caught and pulled the ATV up and flipped. He said he saw the full underside and balled up trying to protect himself.
Allen said he went to the hospital today and ended up with two broken ribs. His arm is burnt from the tire pulling the skin off. His helmet is now a hood ornament --it likely saved his life. Allen sounded like he was in good spirits but said it hurts to laugh. The positive is his ATV was unhurt and he sounds like he overall will heal fine. I'll let him fill in any more details when he posts. The good thing is he's OK. He's definitely a tough TTB'r!

Allen, glad you decided to get checked out. This was discussed at the time of the mishap. It's always a good idea to get checked out even if it seems like nothing at all is wrong. Heal quick Allen and see ya soon.
