I will make this short but I wanted to mention that we had Alvin take us on some Outlaw trails. He warned us before hand and it was every bit as bad as he said it would be.
Several God awful hill ascents and descents. These were steeper than any thing I have gone up and down, and they were several hundred feet long. He said if it had been wet he would not have taken us on them. At the end we all made it without any issues.
I have put them on the map and in honor of Allen's dad I have named them what he would have called Tom on Saturday, "Candy Ass".

I can't believe Bob on hill difficulty. Bob tends to close his eyes on the tough stuff.
Dean/Allen -- tell the truth... How were the hills? 1 = easy 10 = "I'm gonna die"

I logged 265 mi for the ride. prob 20 of that was spinning in the goop Sat afternoon. The H/M trails got a lot of traffic Sat and all the mud holes were spread into syrup mud by Sat pm. On the return ride Sat Dean, Allen and I went with the guide Alvin while the C A's took the road back. Alvin took us on some side trails which had steep climbs to an incredible view. Sat pm Dean and I had much more trouble on H/M black 99. Even the dirt bikers could not do that trail. Sun near Williamson I helped a rider who flipped his machine on a green trail ( I expect he was going too fast and landed wrong from a jump) He was not hurt but almost went off the mountain. The Matewan trip is full of surprises. They promise a new hot tub next time. We will see.

Randy, A couple of years back I would rate the hills as 10 beyond my ability and the capability of the machines. I would now call them a 8 to 9.

The outlaw trails that Alvin took us on did have some pucker factor. I would rate the up hills at a 6 or 7 and the down hills at an 8. Nothing that we rode on compared to the Hatfield 97 (double black diamond) trail that we seen. That trail has a pucker factor of 100 on a 10 point scale.

As Eric said, HM 97 is unbelievable. I cannot believe HM has a trail like that in their system. I truly believe that the laws of physics would prevent a big utility from making it. It is by far the steepest hill I have ever seen, and on top of that it is loose black coal like rock. Oh, did I mention that it is 200 feet high.

So that HM 97 tops the double black on Pinnacle Creek 94? Very impressive. Most TTB'rs have turned away from Pinnacle Creek 94 in the last year. I guess the HM trails are trying to cater to all types of riders by adding a few pucker trails. Pinnacle Creek 94 has enough warning signes that it takes 10 minutes to read them all...
Eventually I gotta see that 97. Sounds like a good one. If Dean calls it a major pucker trail then I likely would shy away from it.

Randy, 97 sounds like the hill we climbed in CO with 200 ft and loose black rocks at the top. I took a look at it last year on the first day when it was wet and decided I would rather ride the rest of the weekend rather than spend it in the hospital.
We rode the WTOP in KY over the weekend let Nate ride his so didn't do any pucker trails. It's not a place we've ridden before and probably not going to add it as a future destination. A lot of the marked trails had been taken over by logging or mining but it did have some potential for "outlaw" trails.

Trail 99 was the one Dean and I turned around on. It was only a black trail not a double black like 97!

OK -- well now you can hear from the Candy A@@ --- Per Allens Dad -- I thought the trails were at about 8 in difficulty -- Also, I did not have any trouble with either the ups or downs -- however any small mistake would have you flipped over or off the edge and I do not care to live on the edge as much as we did on saturday.
But I am glad Allen, Dean and Doc enjoyed the steep ups and downs -- and too bad Randy, Ken and Lonnie missed this one -- they would have loved these trails.
All in all it was a great weekend of riding ----

We just found "candyass" this weekend. Bob t is correct it's a 10 on sketchyness. Wife's 1st trip and she had anxiety attack. The start and end has a good 30 degree angle to the side ride up w barely any Birm and endless falling if you mess up. Very tight hugging trees so you dont fall off. There's a long amazing stretch where your on the ridge climbing higher and higher and can look down both sides of the mountains. Wish my wife hadn't been flipping out cuz I would have enjoyed stopping to take it in. Glad we found it early before beer 30 cuz that would have been bad. Glad we conquered it but not trying to go again lol. One of those can't turn back moments.

I do know these Candy Azz trails. Tight and steep. About turned over at beginning of CA1.
