Went up to Brown Mountain OHV near Morganton on Tuesday 11-9 for day training ride. I have not been up there in several years to ride. If your looking for a good black trail, hang on, technical ride, go up and do " number 9". I don't think they have done any trail maintenance in some time and the trails are all ruts, roots and rock. Number 9 is about 4-5 miles and took about 2 hrs, with a lot of spotting and hanging on. If you like that type of riding go on up before they close it up for the year (end of November)......but be Careful...its a "girly trail".

Kevin,
I have done #9 a few times now and yes it's very slow and technical. That is the same trail Robert broke a ball joint and it took us 3 hrs to get him out.

I have heard brown is the destroyer of men and quads. Sounds fun.

Oh my gosh, I’ve never had to turn around at a bad spot on a green trail. We did today. Michael P and I rode the Brown Mountain trails near Morganton, NC. The trails didn’t look like they had been maintained in a long time. There was slick snow on most of the trails. The green trails were blue or worse. The blue trails were downright treacherous. It was trail 10 that we turned around at. We got to a spot where the trail dropped 30 feet about 80 degrees down sheer rock. There was a bit of a rut where you could put one tire, but the only place to put the other tire was about four feet higher. There was just too much risk of tipping over and getting hurt, we so turned around on this supposedly green trail. We were warned not to take trails 1A (we asked someone there) and 9 (thanks Kevin B). We did take trails 1, 4, 6, 8, and 1b. We took blue trail 6 for a short time, but the trail turned into a steep “V”. Both Michael and I nearly did a slow rollover in the “V” there. Some trails were one ways with no way to get to the start of the trail because other trails were so bad. It makes no sense to have one way ATV trails. We got the trail passes for $5.00 at a store near the turn off the Brown Mountain Beach road. Overall, we rode 26 miles, but were disappointed we couldn’t take the approximately 10 miles of trails because we didn’t want to get ourselves killed or seriously injured. I want my money back!

I think some of the trails at BM are every bit as tough as some of the Colorado trails we did in Sept....you just fall 100 ft instead of 1000 to the bottom. kb
