Rode two great outlaw trails near Hilltop this Fourth of July weekend. The first one is what I dubbed the Windmill Gap Trail. It is 15.8 miles long and goes from Windmill Gap Rd to Trail 46 of the Hatfield McCoy Indian Ridge trail system. I’d give it a blue rating on the Hatfield McCoy rating sytem. It had challenging mud holes and mud hole bypasses for those who didn't want to get too dirty. I have two waypoints for you to find it – WindmillGapRd and Trail46. The trail is not marked. It starts across the street from the Northfork Trail Head of the Indian Ridge trail system and takes you to a place called Tinys which is a stone’s throw from Trail 23 of the Pinnacle Creek trail system. It is 8.2 miles long and is a green trail. In all, we rode 144 miles this weekend.

Larry, good job. I have about 90% of the connector on my track file and about 50% of the other one. I will include these missing sections.

Bob,
You are the master on GPS maps and tracks. I like your idea of having a session on editing and uploading tracks. I barely know how to use Garmin's MapSource program. Its not easy to use for me. I do my own tracks because I have a terrible sense of direction and I like to know where I am and where I've been. I've been totally turned around before and was only able to get out of the woods because I had my own tracks. You are right about the Garmin Nuvi series. I have a Nuvi 1400 for the car. I use the Garmin 60CSx when ATVing. I can upload and display maps, but it won't display tracks I upload on the Nuvi. Its funny that the Nuvi can show you bread crumb tracks (tracklogs) that show you where you've been, but it won't let you display your own tracks.

I totally missed telling everyone about the most exciting part of the whole trip this weekend. I saw a bear. A real live, wild bear!!! Really! It was all black. It was lopping on the trail in front of me. I happened to be leading on that part of the trail. I was on the creek trail between Wagon Wheel and the bottom of Stair Steps. At first I thought it was a large dog, only the size was about twice the size of the biggest dog I'd ever seen. Its gait was different from a dogs as well. I was screeming and yelling into my walkie talkie so much that Tom D, who was behind me, was so concerned, he thought the bear had already pounced on me. Eventually, the bear made a right angle off the trail onto a 70 degree slope up the mountain. When it got to a ledge, it paused and stared back at us.

Joseph and I had a great time this weekend, thanks for the use of the shower to Larry and Tom. After a long dirty ride, a shower is needed. We are looking forward to the next ride.
