Thursday morning, me, Randy, Allen and, Wiley and Mike Moore headed to Mullens to find these trails Mike C. and Tyler talked about. We went via Beartown Flats down to the creek trail over to Butterfly Junction and up to Lusk Cemetery to Spider Creek To HMPC-23. On the creek trail we ran into a HUGE Coal Mine dozer (D-10 or bigger) He was just going from one mine to another on the trail. He was two wide for the trail and was taking out trees on both sides which were all laid down facing us on the trail. The trail that goes up to Lusk Cemetery that used to have that nasty group of rocks you had to climb over has been graded and is super smooth nown can't even tell where the rocks used to be. (Al had mentioned this to me a couple of months ago). We went into Mullens and ate at the new BBQ place. We came back via the creek trail. From Beer Can Alley to almost the drinking tree has been plowed, it was a mess and one spot was a big deep hole with very soft mud along with bank coming up the other side. It did not appear to be trail maintenance but rather a large dozer just made a mess.
Now the bad news, good news and worse news.
Bad News
The Trailhead and trails that Mike and Tyler talked about do not exist (We think they were smoking some of that Whacky Weed). Still Run road that would be the road to the supposed trailhed is closed .7 miles from Hwy-10, there was a guardhouse and guard that stopped us. We took some trails and got back on the road further up and found the area where we thought it was and there is nothing there. No signs, trails, nothing. We took the trail (over grown weeds) that they had place the pin on and it is not part of any trail system.
Good news
We rode some really nice trails above Mullens that we had not ridden in a couple of years. Had a god lunch at Rebel Smokehouse BBQ in Mullens.
Worse News
I got stuck in a mud hole that I am sure you will see pics of, thanks to Allen for pulling me out. But that is not the worst news. Just before Beer Can Alley there are two big water/mud holes. When I came out of the first one my RZR sputtered and died. After a few minutes it started. When I came out of the second one it died and again. It would crank but the Pod indicators just flickered for a second. Lights would not come on. After a few minutes it would not even crank just dead. Randy towed me to Pinnacle Crk Campground and Allen from there to Hilltop. When Randy was towing me we hit that mud shit hole that had been made, wwe got through the edge of it but he could not get me up the bank n the other side if the creek so Wiley hooked up to him and got us up the bank. Thanks to some great friends.
Lesson Learned
I had taken my front bumper off which had my front tow hook on it, I did't put back on the frame. The only thing we had to tow from was the winch hook which worked fine except for one little issue. The towing and jerking packed the synthetic cable around the spool extremely tight. When we tried to winch it on the trailer the winch would not go out, we could get to go in so the contactor and motor are Ok. Allen got his machine next to my truck and towed it onto the trailer.
Tomorrow I will check grounds, fuses, etc. The battery is good since my auxiliary items (winch, light bar, USB ports, etc worked fine and still do. They are wired independent of chassis wiring.
The others went to Wilmore Dam today and I am sure will post up.
I have attached our track going, I left off the one overgrown trail, it had a big rutted hill that I went up while leading (Randy was impressed that I went up it). We turned around at the top of it.
