Cool weather finally arrived at Hilltop Escape. Got down to 57 degrees Friday night. Ate dinner at Buffalo Trails. Upon leaving, my 2014 Can-Am Commander would not move forward. I backed out of the parking spot, but when I put the gear shift lever in High, the instrument panel gear indicator showed “N” for neutral. When I put the shift lever in Low, it showed “N” as well. I had Park and Reverse but no High or Low forward gears. So I went back to Hilltop in reverse…… No I didn’t. Of course not. Because the parking lot was completely full and it was already dark, I decided to leave my SxS at Buffalo Trails overnight. Steve H ate dinner with me at Buffalo Trails. He rode his Yamaha Grizzly to Hilltop, got in his pickup and brought me back to Hilltop.
On Saturday morning, Steve and I went back to Buffalo Trails in my pickup and trailer. We loaded my SxS using my winch and took it to Crumpler Mountain Resort. The owner of Crumpler Mountain Resort is also a fantastic SxS mechanic. I arrived at the Crumpler complex at 9:00am. After explaining the symptoms, Chris Morse and a friend of his, Eddie, were removing interior panels within 5 minutes to get to the engine compartment. Within a few more minutes, Chris had diagnosed and repaired my SxS. The cable between the shift lever and the engine had partially separated. He had a new replacement cable already on hand. Sure enough, I had the High and Low gear positions again. Shana, Chris’s wife, billed me $115 to fix my SxS. The replacement cable was $75. They charged me $40 for labor. I asked Shana to charge $50 for labor and later felt guilty for not telling her to charge more, but she wouldn’t do it. Total bill was $115.
Chris saved the day. Rode all day to Skyline Resort and back. I followed Steve while he explored trails that were not on our maps. We managed to get back in one piece. No issues at all and nothing but fun all day.
