Since Bob warned us about Wagon Wheel Christmas in July we decided to try to stay away from other riders. Decision was to head to Sophia but skip Barkers Creek. We went to Matoka, by the Christmas Tree Farm (grown up now), Flat Top Road, and then through Ghent. Approx 70 miles to Sophia and arrived at 4pm after leaving Hilltop at 9:30am. Great ride. Never passed any other riders except on way back since we took Barkers Creek back. Pics below are Toll Booth on 77, road under 77, Chinese deliciousness, and route. Lots to explore around Ghent. There are trails everywhere over there.

Looks like a great ride. Wish I could have made it. How many machines? Just stinks work got in the way this weekend.

Allen, Mike, Lonnie, and myself. Small group but we moved along pretty well with few stops. Traveled 82 miles before we ran into anyone in trails. Perfect riding!

Randy - Send me a track if you got it.
Doc Best and I went "off-roading" in my pickup. I have an "off-roading" setting on my truck GPS. You would not believe how many single lane paved roads there are that goes to nowhere. When the GPS took me to a narrow dirt road, I decided to switch to "fastest" route. Took us 2 1/2 hours get to back when it normally would have taken us 45 minutes. We left from Beckley.

Bob - You're thinking I'm smart enough to go by Randy's verbal directions. I'm not.

I didn’t keep the track but it’s crazy easy. Go to Matoka. Matoka go Xmas tree farm. Xmas tree farm to Ghent. Ghent to Sophia.
Many of the trails to Christmas Tree Farm are grown up but visible. Really great ride. I would not ride over there in peak winter due to Winterplace crowd.

On the map there is a trail called CC (Camp creek) trail. You can take it all the way to the Skyline Resort for lunch. Skyline is where the two big rides I go on start.

Felt odd riding on Flat Top road and past Winterplace in Ghent. Does James/HotRod take people on those two roads? Felt too commercial.

Larry and I were going by truck to Sophia and wound up in Staunton Va. at Woodrow Wilson’s museum. In fact we were headed there and on the way back came through Sophia. We also went to the exhibition mine in Beckley
Next ride Aug 9-11, hopefully Larry will have at least one machine working.
