It was Kevin R and I this weekend. We started out on Hatfield-McCoy trails from Hilltop Escape. Stopped at the Ashland general store and was assured that we could legally ride all the way to Northfork on the Indian Ridge Trail System. About 15 miles in, we were stopped where they were doing major logging. The entire mountain was denuded of any vegetation. Leftover trees, branches and boulders were in the trail. There was a recent fire with charred remains of trees everywhere. We had to turn around. We got on Windmill Gap Rd and rode it all the way to US 52. Crossed the road and took a scenic one lane road all the way to Bramwell. Ate a hearty lunch at the Corner Café. Decided to ride the Pocahontas Spearhead trails. After getting our permits at the Trailhead we had the most fun I've had an a long time. They had new trails. They were challenging and technical with lots to tight switchbacks going up and down in quick succession. Got lost a few times because of no trail markers. But it was so so much fun! Got back to Hilltop. Took an hour washing the mud off. Ate dinner at the Hilltop Escape Café. Chili beans, cornbread and tea. Yum. You missed a great ride guys right in our nearby neighborhood!

Over at Spearhead Green is the new Black. A much needed change of scenery, a little lax on maintenance but some good riding for sure. Worth the $20 for a day pass.

I ride those trails 4 months ago. Don’t remember any black trails.

I have the complete set of Spearhead tracks and color coded correctly with several waypoints. They are attached. Spearhead Trails Dec 2018.zip (725.48 KB)
