Only damage was the front mount was twisted. Can I heat it up and straighten it out and reuse or will it weaken the metal? Attachments:

That looks like a forging on the end that bent. That will be a bitch to straighten your self. Maybe a shop can. I would give it a try, it was heated to forge it. Could be a casting but I would think not. Once straightened you could weld reinforcements on the sides.

I agree with bob, only advice I would give is to cool it in oil, not water as this will/ could cause crack's. When we used to forge stuff it was in a kiln then into oil barrel. water cools to fast causing it to become brittle. You would either need a kiln or a oxy/acetylene torch. heat it red hot and put it in a vise and see what you can do.

I'd find a welding shop and see if they could fix it.

Well for that much maybe I'd try it and just carry an extra log or two with me! lol, the great thing about those log spares if there everywhere and you don't have to carry them around! Randy's right, I don't have a good track record with fire.

I will have an operating chainsaw the next time a log spare is needed. We now know how. I think we could make it go 5 miles next time. I prefer not to try it...

So you guys don't think a regular propane torch won't get it hot enough??

Use two and a big sledge hammer. That will work.

So you guys don't think a regular propane torch won't get it hot enough?? propane burns around 3500 degrees, typical steel melting point would be around 2500-2800 degrees. I suppose with enough time and directed heat it may work. Maybe map gas with oxygen added for faster results.Propane is made for soldiering not even good for brazing. torch or kiln.

Two propanes might work. I think you will need to secure the swing arm and put a pipe inside the bearing hole and twist it. Remove the bearing. I don;t see how hammering will work, it is twisted.
