The hammock is a suspended tent. Even with the nylon fly it weighs about 3 pounds which is less than a two man tent. A single bivy tent is the closest thing in weight for packing. With a hammock you don't have to worry about the floor leaking! It would be useless in the desert with no trees. Much more comfortable than a bivy and in the desert, they can still be used as a bivy. Some probably better than others. Some have a waterproof fabric like a tent.

Fun Weekend , at the time I was misarable ( heat , bugs , not packing enough suff ETC ) but looking back mostly it was my own lack of being prepared , but Daryl and Matt helped me along and looked like vetrans . This is that next step in this riding , ride camp ride , Daryl and I have talked for years about doing this on those rides up to camp . Formost I missed my ranger on this ride , the RZR is not a easy machine to pack to camp , but have some ideas on how to do it better next time . So Drew, just curious, are you up for doing another camping on the trail trip? Did you decide it was more of an adventure now and fun, or are you still thinking it was a little uncomfortable? Just curious as to who else might want to do a trip like this in the future? I thought it was a pretty cool adventure! We barely scratched the surface though. Could spawn into a really fun trip if we did more days and maybe added more activities.

I think it would be allot of fun to camp on the trail. Colorado and Utah are amazing places for camping on the trail. When trail riding in WV, going to scout for spots to trail camp.

I'm up for a trip like that in the future. Plenty of places to explore that require several days.

I know a lot of you guys are able to ride more than I have been lately. Mark up potential spot with your gps. I know some of us will prefer trees within 15' of each other to hang hammocks for the ultimate in comfort. CO, and UT would be incredible camping on the trail. Would think a tent would be a good backup plan out there in case of no trees. I know some of those areas are thin on trees.

You guys did not break me !!! I know better what to expect now .... ok, great! Just thought I'd ask. I was a Boy Scout so I try my best to "Be Prepared"!....although you never have enough gear. The hard part is figuring out what not to bring. The good thing is we have guinea pigged some of the unknowns now. We know to look for campsites early in the day because the afternoon may not present any. You can always backtrack to a good locale. It had been a long time since I had done a real campout so it was good for me to get some of the bugs worked out. I think this could be a lot of fun going forward.

Cool, and it might be a good opportunity for those of you going out West to practice a backwoods campout if has been a while. You may want to do that out there or simply brush up in case of an emergency. I'm sure you're a long way from civilization on some of the trails there.

I just don't want to stay at the Bear town Inn , you check in and they poop you out . Maybe a scouting ride for camping spots ( several ) so we have choices and can really check them out before we camp there , maybe even stock pile some wood for fire ETC . It takes some time to set up camp ( I'm just glad it was not raining cause I probably would have slept in the RZR ) .
