 Molded backrest advice

Need to look into a molded back rest with a seat and was wondering if anyone had any input to offer. Only Pre-req's I have is that it's rigid mounted and has armrests. Want it for somewhere for my son to sit and I would feel safer with the armrests. Right now on the back is a MadDog soft pack style, it works for storage so I'll move it to the 300, it just makes me nervous being soft and the way it gives, especially with him behind me. I have a 550XP Polaris if that makes a difference. Right now I'm looking at Kimpex, Motovan and the Kolpin, if you have any history with these let me know plus any others. Thanks!!!

I know many people use those to support riders and they seem to work well. Just take into account that when ATVs roll over or tip, it is the weight of the unit that breaks bones and injures riders. And a hard case could possibly do more damage than a soft case.

I am sure when your riding your child, you will be extra careful... just want to make you aware so you can be ready for preventive action incase of a roll over.

I had the Kimpex deluxe box and loved it on my Can Am, my daughter really liked it too.

Brian makes a good point about the box in an accident but just like seat belts an argument can be made either way. I rolled my old Grizzly once with the hard box on it and the hard box kept my legs from getting stuck under the bike. I have no doubt that without the box on at the time that it would have been painful.

Jason:

I shopped boxes a few months back and read many reviews/feedbacks from purchasers/users - which I tend to trust (especially if there's a trend in complaints/praise). The Kolpin was considered flimsy by many of the users, while everyone raved about the Kimpex boxes and seats/trunks and how rugged they are. I ended up buying a Cajun Dry Stor rear box because it was much less expensive, also very rugged and I only needed storage - not a seat.

Keep in mind, a very rigid, strong box/seat can also help support the weight of the ATV in the event of a rollover; I rolled mine at Brimstone last month and, if anything, that box kept some of the weight off of me. Of course like Brian said, if an arm or leg were to be under the box, it could could possibly hurt you worse. Anyway, I don't think you can go wrong with Kimpex.

Oh, I should mention that when it rolled on me the Kimpex didn't get a scratch on it. It was a tough box. I just sold mine for $100 a month or two ago.

good information guys.

a strong box, when used correctly, could actually prevent injury.

Daryl-
I found out yours was for sale AFTER it was sold (darn)! That was the exact box I wanted and yours was in great shape and a great deal. Many of the local guides on our ride up in KY had that box - that's where it caught my eye.

Nelson, I don't think you would be disappointed with that box at all. I know its pricy but it really is worth it.

Oh, I agree completely, Daryl. But, I ended up buying the Cajun Dry Stor for less than half retail price from a supplier going out of business. Anyway, it is very simple (like me), also sturdy and waterproof (like the Kimpex) and it also had great reviews. The Kimpex is more versatile, but this one serves my purpose (for now). In the not-too-distant future I'll be buying a new two-up for stability, and will then buy a Kimpex.

Thanks all good input.....I actually like the comment that "if used correctly, can prevent injury" you forgot that if it's holding water it can prevent forest fires too!!!
