;D Ok the fact that it snow still has me laughing . Daryl and I got a little later start than we wanted out of winston but were just happy to be on the road ( Rain and more Rain ) . Matt was just a few mile behind us most of the way till Wythville . We stayed in a cabin at KOA and I was very comfortable ( and I'm a big guys ) , its not a motel room , but a comfortable cabin . Friday night was just relax and party by the fire . Morning came and off to breakfast at the Coal Creek Cafe , back to camp and Lonnie and Randy were there waiting , but no Dean ? So we gave him a while and headed off to go to Hill top , just incase he was there . Along the way he hears us on the Radio and says he is headed back to hill top he had bent a tie rode end , sure enough too bad to fix there he was out . So we loaded him up in a Rino and off we went . We headed to the Creek trail and along the way I took off my Goggles and when I went to put them back on , GONE .... So I got on the Radio and Matt found them but lens were gone . So we went towards the Wagon Wheel to see if they had a set . Along the way my Eyes started to burn and hurt from the cold and wind , to the point I stopped a few times ( I had waved everyone on as there was no sence for them to have to go that slow ) but at one point I kinda got scared cause I could not see at all ) . I got to the wagon wheel and said that I was out ( my Eyes were really hurting any time wind hit them ) . I really did not want this group to back track again , so with safety glasses from Daryl , I turned my Polaris over to Dean and I rode in a Rino for the rest of the ride . At first I was so uncomfortable but after a while found my spot and off to welch . I rode with a guy named Larry (friend of mine ) on his 450 so we had a ball laughing and cutting up , watch everyone and playing . We got to welch , ate at the Drive in ( we made a bad frozen mess ( but I tipped very well , enough the owner was worried , but I felt better about it . getting back into that cold Rino was hard , I was warm , full and tired but I thought we had a way out , Larrys Key was frozen in place ( Yea lets call a Wrecker ;D) but Lonnie went and Fixed it :'( and off to the gas station , frozen gas Cap ;D, I'll call the wrecker and pay , no Daryl had to get it off :'( So off we took ..... Cold , full and tired , back in the woods it improved but was still very cold and wet . We left around 10ish and belive we arived back about 7ish ? 70 miles . Thanks to Dean for Riding my bike , Larry for letting me ride with him , and the multiple offers to ride with everyone else , and Matt for the invite on the cabin . I need a few more items before attemting this again , and a ride in a Rino is more fun than I could have imagined . Thanks to all that made it , and Ken for leading , Lonnie for being Lonnie , Randy , and Daryl for the ride up and the life saving glasses , and Matt for all the free beer in my cooler ;D , feel free to stop by the house Matt or will bring it by one day this week .
I took a lot of Videos , plan to post them here as I get them uploaded , but feel this one sums it up the best , Enjoy !!!!!

Here is my take:

It rained. It stopped.

It snowed. It stopped.

Drew got wet feet.

Sunday was sunny.

I broke.

Went home on the hook.

The end.

Matt, we need more info than that. What happened to your truck? Where is your Rhino and trailer? If you need to go get it I can probably work it out tomorrow after work.

Here are some pics I took. I had a great time and for those who backed out because of the weather.........bad mistake. We had a great time!

Yes, great time this weekend! Don't have time for a report or pics now, but will get to it later tonight.

All together we did almost 160 miles in 2.5 days. ~55 Friday, ~75 sat. and ~30 on Sunday.

I'll let Matt fill in the details on what broke, but I will tell ya that dam Rhino is a HEAVY beast to have to pull out of the woods!!

Lonnie and myself rode on Sunday up to Pinnacle Rock and around some trails in that area. We figured no one from KOA was riding on Sunday....

I am glad we went to Pinnacle Rock. It gave me a chance to test the new jetting and Trinity Sheave on the Rhino. Went up Pinnacle Rock without issue -- I was actually letting off the throttle approaching the top. Part of the improvement I'm sure was not having Jay in it...

I did heavily glaze my back brake pads on the Rhino this weekend. I found myself riding with the parking brake on going to Welch. Time for new pads later this week.

I also got to ride Lonnie's Can-Am. My first time riding one. That's a nice ride. Incredible instant throttle response. I'd be skeered to use it rock crawling but would definitely want it to run from the law. It also sits higher -- I think his Can-Am is higher than my Cat. Definitely has more ground clearance than his previous Bomb or most Popos. I'll have to consider a Can-Am when I purchase another quad -- maybe next year.

Matt -- What Happened to the Rhino? Who tugged it back? How far?

No problem with truck other than the big injectors didn't like the cold morning start.

The Rhino came back to the KOA on the Hook. My fine engineering.......

Great trip, probably my best WV ride ever. Been wanting that snow ride for so long. Couldn't have worked out much better. The Rhino was a blast and met my expectations until my modifications took effect.

Daryl, I really appreciate the offer. I've got everything home. It wasn't the truck, just the Rhino. Ken got me home. It died at Honeycutt Crossroads.....same place the Grizzly died before new years....lol. That's the last 3 atv/ruv ride that my junk has come home on the hook....lol...dammit. I'm laughing instead of :'(

Not sure if it was my snorkel engineering or the quote/unquote: EPI "Severe Duty" belt.

What happened Matt, did the belt break on you? Those snorkels should be right so I doubt that was the cause.......unless that prefilter didn't let enough air in.

You're on the right track.

Belt broke. First time I've ever had that happen. I feel confident that all the sheave work and new belt replacement was correct.

What wasn't correct was when watching the Hunterworks video's on his products, I remember seeing him pulling the splash gaurds off the factory snorkels behind the drivers seat to put the UNI intake filter on. Well.....my dumbass forgot that when we ran the snorkels that the intake side (previously on the drivers side) ended up on the passengers side. I had the prefilter on the exhaust side which had to back up the system with hot air. I'm not sure I'll even put it back on the intake side. Might restrict an already restricted system with the snorkels. The stock snorkels are 2.5" to 3" or so and shorter.

Randy, what did you read on the prefilters? I think you mentioned you read something about issues with them.

I'll do a little more research to see what others are experiencing with snorkels and belts.

See why I said on the iron butt ride that all new modifications should have at least one ride on them to make sure they are sound.....dammit, I'm an idiot. :-[

I'm being a little dramatic. Not that big of a deal. It's a little frustrating getting a tow home for 3 out of last 4 rides (actually 5 if you count on riding at my brothers farm), but still...that's a lot. I guess all 3 were different issues. One was my engineering error. One was my driving error (sunk the Grizzly in a water hole that was deeper than I thought), and one was a mechanic error when a carb vent was left off.

It was an awesome ride otherwise. Rhino was a blast. I was having a ball when I started to notice the issue. Was able to limp to a fire road where Ken was able to tow me the rest of the way after the belt completely let go.

Thanks James. I agree, I look at them as learing experiences too. I try to share those too so others don't make the same mistakes I have. Unfortunately, I learned a lot lately.....lol ;D

Any new machine has to be learned. Hopefully I'm about done on this one to ensure it will be reliable on the trail.

I can handle it on the Grizzly because I put it in some precarious positions, this one I'm hoping to have it just for the trail.

You are right this is a perfect example of why its good to have a ride on any new mod before the iron butt ride or the Utah ride!

That Rhino belt must have been hot as heck to let go. I would not put a CVT intake filter on. I looked at them but the the general feeling on the forums was that it really restricted air flow thus creating heat. The Yamaha and Arctic Cat belts are always under tension and are not overly effected by a little grit. I do wonder if your filter had iced over thus restricting flow more. I had ice everywhere on my Rhino -- my choke lever was a pian to break loose.

The weird thing on my CVT intake is that the drain plug always has a little water in the drain -- not much but a little, maybe 2ozs. I do wonder if a little water (mist/rain) is being sucked in through the CVT intake . Does not hurt anything but is visible in the drain and amounts to just a little bit when I clean it out.

Well, I have 2 potential culprits anyway. I've heard of issues on the Dayco, but this wasn't a Dayco. It's sold by EPI who also sells Dayco's but it had another name....can't remember. I think Yamaha is the way to go though. I think the filter was the problem, especially the fact that I had it on the exhaust side. It would have slowed the the cool air from coming somewhat if it was on the intake side, but not kept the hot in. I think that was the biggest thing, but I also think all were factors.

Yeah, the whole tranny was hot. I hope I didn't get it so hot that anything warped or melted. I guess I'll find out when I open it up. Probably a lot of cleaning for me to do in there. Might be some snorkel repair to do from the heat as well...you never know until you get in there. No ice or mud on the filter, it was clean, just on the wrong side.

Thanks for the info you read on the prefilter. Will probably just leave it off despite my creative placement that probably caused the failure.

I did not read your entire post earlier. I finally got around to it. If you look on RhinoForums you will have a tough time finding anyone that actually had a Yamaha Belt tear apart. They will slip when worn but very rarely come apart. This is good since they will "get you home" just slowly and with alot of revving. I'm not sure how they make them but Yamaha has a great spec for the OEM belts. Even the most modified Rhino's tend to run OEM belts.

When I made a hidden snork on my Cat I thought I could prefilter the intake air with a coarse gauze like filter. I could easily see through the filter and just thought it would hold back any mud or huge rain drops. That was awful -- above 3000rpm it would spit and sputter. It's amazing how even a poor coarse filter will restrict airflow.

Glad the Rhino made it back to an easy to tow place. It would be a real pain to try to change a belt in the woods.

The Yamaha belt I had installed last week came new in yamaha pack from ebay (item 180213563328) -- was $108 shipped to my house via Overnight Express Mail. I called Mt Airy and they were out, also called Midway Yamaha and they were out. Mt Airy called back since they found one but they wanted $104 and I would have to drive 30 minutes each way ($12 gas). Now that I remember I need to call Mt Airy since they said they would hold it for me....

Randy , not sure where you get that a Polaris has low ground clearnce ?

Drew -- Most Polaris's I have followed have a flat suspension (center diff is straight across to wheels) when the rider is on the seat. Empty the differential is higher. The center looks approx 8" max off the ground with rider on the seat. I noticed this on Carvers, Bob's, and Yours. The Can-Am of Lonnies looks like 12" (the spec) to the center of the differential when he is sitting on it. It is not flat -- the center is still alot higher. My Cat is the same way -- my big butt does not mash it flat. My main point was that his Can-Am sits high. I always thought of Can-Am's as more compact but Lonnies is tall. When I sat on it I actually thought it was taller than my Cat. When I put my Rhino in my basement I got off and sat on my Cat for comparison -- I swear the Can-Am is higher. After riding Lonnie's I would not be afraid to follow him in off-camber riding since his is tall also. Now on hill climbs he would definitely have the advantage since his Can-Am is 10" longer. I was not knocking the Polaris's since I see an advantage to the Polaris's suspension -- a smooth ride and better off-camber stability.
