We (Jay, DarrylM, Sandy, and myself) arrived at Hilltop on Friday with around 6 to 8" of snow on the ground. Plenty of ice and snow on the road up to Hilltop. No one wanted to take their truck back down (skeer'd maybe) so we took the ATV's and Rhino to town -- good 12 mile ride. It was cold on the way there but on the way back we decided to go to the Stairsteps and play alittle in the snow. We ended up with around 35 miles that evening. I ended up with the rear drivers side XTR off the rim. Not sure when it broke the bead. Maybe when we were cutting up doing doughnuts or maybe when we did that long mudhole coming back to Hilltop. Either way that was my project the next morning. I learned that XTR's do not set bead well if cold. I also learned that 7 psi is not enough for the heavy Rhino. I now ride with 10psi.

Saturday was a great ride. Did the goat trail (had to cut a tree with my battery chainsaw -- it worked but slow and took 1 full battery charge). The Rhino followed the ATV's fine -- only issue I had was the coil wire came off in one mud hole. Water went in the exhaust but hurt nothing. We ended up going to a place that had a better view than "The View" -- you could see many mountains away. Lots of riding near there. It basically had a tall hill with a US Flag on top of a huge rock. You could see 100's of trails and had a great view down on Wagon Wheel. Jay has the pics and hopefully will post soon. We stayed up there quite a while and played in some mud and hills. Also we left one area quick once we realized some of the holes were being set to blast. We found "quicksand" and had to winch Darryl then his ATV out (very funny). We then found a interesting trail that was definitely not for my Rhino -- a good girlie trail. Jay and myself debated that trail in the Rhino but knew once past the point of no return we could be in a really bad spot. We put family first -- we was not sure the roll cage would be enough if things went bad. Still was a great ride and a place I want to return to!

Great Ride! Hopefully Jay, DarrylM, and Sandy will add comments.

I agree with Randy it was a great ride. the ride back to Bluewell to the pizza place was cold and wet. And Randy spoke of. It made the girly trail look like a highway and made the misery trail in Ky look not so bad lets just say i don't think i will try that one again.

Well I had a blast this weekend also. Thanks to Randy for letting me ride with him in the Rhino and also for letting me drive some. IO had just as much fun just riding with him plus I never even unloaded my ride off the trailer so I didn't have to wash it when I got home. I guess I need to go to Randys house and help him wash the Rhino. We slept in today until around 8:30 and went and ate breakfast with Carol and Roger. We had some sunday entertainment watching Carol fuss and cuss 2 girls on sports quads for riding fast and in her fields. She told them to load up and get the $%#^% out and never come back. She was hot this morning. She should have been in Church HAHA. They are really tired of people not obeying the rules and not signing in and not leaving any kind of donation. They put signs on 4 trucks today for the people to never return she had their license plate numbers because they did not come in and sign in and give a donation. We hung out with them for a while. They really love all the TTB members. We finally got packed up and cleaned the camper and hit the rode around 11:30. We hit Ryans Buffet in Princeton and got our grub on and came on down the hill. Here are some pictures I took. The one of Darryl waste deap in the quicksand slime he was in deep and we had to winch him out. Can't wait till next time. http://s18.photobucket.com/albums/b136/TTB2000/Jay/hilltopmarch12008/

The trail is cool and can be viewed from the top or bottom. It's what's at the top that makes it worthwhile. An incredible view just 1/3 mile away!

Jay/Darryl/Sandy -- you want to try to explain how to get to the flag? I can't explain crap. I know we followed a gas pipe line after the Wagon Wheel.

That's wgon wheel with red roof:

The flag -- it's really up there. Likely is highest point near Hilltop --
[image]

The view from immediately below the flag at the top of the 300 to 400 ft or so hill -- (flag is maybe 100ft higher)

Why is my Rhino so tiny?

The salute was me trying not to be pissed. Rhino would not fire and I thought I had let water flood through the exhaust. It died instantly in the middle of a deep mud hole. When Darryl found the coil wire off (wire to coil) I was soo happy. I never thought about the coil wire coming off -- guess an ice chunk hit it. I bought Darryl's dinner at Hilltop for finding that!

I think the trail you guys are talking about is on the creek trail that goes from the stairsteps down to the Pinnacle Creek campground right? If you are leaving the stairsteps the trail goes up the hill to your left somewhere along the creek trail. I don't remember a flag but I do know that trail is pretty nasty.

The rock and flag you guys found is called Pinnacle Rock. It used to be a great trail getting up to it but its all been changed around now. I haven't heard anyone mention it in a while so I thought maybe the new highway took it over. There is a trail on the back side you can get up to the flag. I have some pics somewhere of the view from the top of it.

I'd like to see the trail on the backside -- it looked like there may have been a trail but it basically fell off the mountain.

Lotta dirt moving going on up there. It is changing daily. I would only ride up there on weekends. They blast during the week. Also there is a bunch of tree clearing -- gotta get rid of the trees to get to the coal.

Not sure what the name of the trail is but I marked the flag
stop with the gps so I'll know how to get there but after
the blasting things will change execpt for the flag mounted
on the top of the rock it looks as if it's been there awhile
as far as the girlie trail over there not sure if you could
call it the girlie trail but no matter how good your engine
braking is you WILL BE WALKING THE QUAD DOWN
the SXS may be able to stradle the ruts but someone will
have to hold down the back and so poor soul will have to
drive down with the brakes on after going down you will
need a brake job.
