Before you arrive at Brown Mountain, make sure you pick up a $5 riding pass. We used to be able to deposit $5 in a drop box at the entrance. The drop box doesn’t exist anymore. There are two grocery stores on highway 181 on the way to Brown Mountatin. You can pick up the riding passes there. Ken K and I (Larry M) had a great time at Brown Mountain. Brown Mountain is open from April 1st to January 1st every year. There are 34 miles of trails. We rode 33.3 miles. Trails 1, 4, and 6 are two way and are easy trails. Many of the trails are one way because they are very narrow. Trails 1A and 9 were very rocky and difficult. Ken had to hold the back end of my ATV on two steep drops and had to winch me up a sheer rock face boulder on one occasion. I have to say a couple of things about Ken’s Can-Am 800 two seater. The thing can go down down and up steep slopes like a billy goat. His ATV makes it look easy. If Ken hadn’t climbed that sheer rock face boulder on his own, I’d still be on the other side of that rock. Trails 1A, 9, and 2 were very narrow and technical. My shoulders are going to be sore for a few days from the constant steering around boulders, rocks, and trees. There was virtually no dust on the trails. Even though we only rode 33 miles, we were on the trails all day from 10:00am to 4:30pm, except for a brief lunch.

Directions:
Distance to Brown Mountain from Winston-Salem, is 100 miles.
From Morgantown take highway 181 north toward Linville; turn right on Brown Mtn. Beach Road (State Road 1405) at a small wooden church on the right. The OHV entrance road is about 5 miles east on the left side, 300 feet beyond a small concrete bridge at the Forest Service sign.

Aw come on now! Angela, me and Connie did Brown Mtn. about 2 months ago. It wasn't that bad. We had a little trouble on Trail 9 between those two boulders right before you get back to the parking lot. We spotted each other and got thru it OK. We did it in two wheel drive without winches. And yes, we did 1A. Those are our 2 favorite trails. I would have joined you guys but I was at Brushy Mountain. I did send some guys to Brown Mtn. that had a 17 year old without the safety class so Richard wouldn't let him ride there. So I gave them directions and told them to check it out. Large group with about 12 guys. Glad you guys had a good and safe day.

Nahh she'd be riding in the "fast" group with Michael B and the gang as we are bombing down the coalroads with zero visibility from the dust.

I was too chicken to go over that boulder on trail 9. That was the biggest obstacle I've come across. The risk was just too great.

Larry - You know I'm just giving you a hard time. That is a very technical spot and we discussed it in depth before attempting it. I would still do that trail again given the choice. I plan on going home to my son after every ride and won't do what I'm not comfortable with either. I don't advocate riding insane or above your head. I was just picking on you because I know you and would ride anywhere with you. I do apologize if it came across differently than what I intended. Sonya

No offense taken. I'm very sure you didn't have a problem climbing that humongous boulder.
